IIT Kanpur Founders’ Coulomb Litech Secures ₹20 Crore for High-Voltage EV Battery Systems

Coulomb Litech, founded by IIT Kanpur alumni, has raised ₹20 crore in seed funding to scale its high-voltage EV battery systems for heavy-duty commercial vehicles. The startup designs proprietary Battery Management Systems (BMS), fast-charging platforms ranging from 51V to 700V, and rugged liquid-cooled battery packs. A new manufacturing facility in Navi Mumbai will support large-scale production.

Skipping the Scooters for the Heavy Lifters

Most new EV startups want to build the next sleek electric scooter or a flashy daily commuter car. Coulomb Litech is going in the exact opposite direction. Founded back in 2020 by a pair of IIT Kanpur grads, Ameya Sathe and Darshil Dharod, this company is strictly chasing the heavy hitters: electric tractors, construction cranes, commercial three-wheelers, and massive material-handling gear. And that hyper-focused strategy just helped them lock down ₹20 crore in fresh seed funding.

The Secret Sauce is in the Software

So, why did investors hand over ₹20 crore? Mostly because Coulomb isn’t just buying off-the-shelf battery parts from overseas and slapping them together. They are engineering the entire brain of the battery from the ground up, right here in India.

They build their own hardware, write the custom software, and design their own proprietary Battery Management Systems (BMS). They even handle the liquid cooling, fast-charging tech, and IoT analytics themselves. Because they keep such a tight grip on the whole ecosystem, their modular platforms—which can push anywhere from 51V up to a massive 700V—can pull off a rare trick: charging incredibly fast without degrading the battery’s overall lifespan. If you’re running a commercial fleet, that kind of durability is the holy grail.

Breaking Ground in Navi Mumbai

The immediate game plan for that ₹20 crore is brick and mortar. They are setting up a brand-new, state-of-the-art manufacturing plant over in Navi Mumbai. It’s a clear signal that they are ready to graduate from the testing phases and start pumping out hardware at serious scale to meet market demand.

Aside from the new factory floor, the cash will act as fuel for their R&D team. They already have several real-world pilot programs running with various vehicle manufacturers across the country, and this funding will help them expand those partnerships and fine-tune their tech under brutal, everyday operating conditions.

Commercial vehicles take a serious beating. By building rugged, locally made battery systems and ramping up production, Coulomb is setting itself up to be the go-to backbone for India’s heavy-duty electric transition.
