Microsoft Gaming’s Big Leadership Shakeup
It’s officially the end of an era over at Xbox. After an incredible 38-year run with Microsoft, Phil Spencer is retiring and handing over the keys to Asha Sharma. She’s stepping in as the new Executive Vice President and CEO of Microsoft Gaming, reporting directly to Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella.
This transition is bringing a few other major changes to the executive lineup. Xbox President Sarah Bond is leaving the company, while Matt Booty is moving up the ladder to Chief Content Officer, where he’ll answer directly to Sharma. Nadella has already voiced his full backing of the new CEO, pointing to her proven track record of scaling massive global platforms and driving serious long-term value.
Sharma’s Playbook: Real Games Over “AI Slop”
Stepping into the top gaming job right now is no walk in the park. The industry is getting squeezed by skyrocketing development costs, unpredictable sales, and fierce competition—factors that have already forced Xbox to bump up its hardware prices. But Sharma seems ready to hit the ground running with a strategy that puts the fans first. She wants to get back to what made the brand great: the core Xbox console experience.
Perhaps the most interesting takeaway from her new vision is her stance on artificial intelligence. Even though her background is heavily rooted in AI, she drew a hard line in the sand regarding its place in gaming. She firmly promised that Xbox won’t try to chase quick profits by flooding the market with “soulless AI slop.” In her view, video games are a human art form first and foremost. While innovative tech can certainly help developers behind the scenes, she insists that the creative soul of gaming has to remain strictly human.
The Resume Behind the New Boss
If you are wondering where Sharma came from, her resume is pretty heavily stacked. Before taking over the gaming division, she actually ran Microsoft’s Core AI Product team as President. In that role, she was responsible for building the foundational AI tech and infrastructure that the company relies on today.
Her track record outside of Microsoft is just as heavy hitting. She previously served as the Chief Operating Officer at Instacart, where she was instrumental in getting the delivery giant profitable and ready for its IPO. Before her stint at Instacart, she spent years as a VP of Product and Engineering at Meta, steering the ship for massive communication platforms like Instagram Direct and Messenger. To top it off, she holds a business degree from the University of Minnesota and currently sits on the corporate boards of The Home Depot and Coupang.
